Choices: Team - Reserve Team - Club
Trophies
Team players' efforts are rewarded with trophies for their schools and homes.
BayAreaChess offers Team and Club options to all students.
1. Duration: The Club classes are about 60 minutes in duration and the Team classes are about 80 minutes in duration. The Team also offers more personalized chess instruction in the extended session.
2. Tournaments: The Team students represent their school in the State Championship (States) and at least six tournaments during the academic year. Read more about tournaments in section below. Club players are not barred from tournaments, and may participate if they wish.
3. Fun-First Learning: The primary goal in both Team and Club is to create a fun and encouraging environment. However, learning chess is an essential component of our program. Consequently, students receive instruction and encouragement to develop their game in a fun environment with hands-on interaction. (Note: We are not a baby-sitting service :)).
4. Undecided students may choose to enroll in any program and change later. Team players who do not meet their obligations may be transferred to the Reserve Team (if available) or Club.
5. Reserve Team is offered in some of our larger programs for students who want to develop in a Team atmosphere before joining the Team. Reserve Team players are highly encouraged, but not required, to meet the Team training and tournament requirements.

More about Tournaments
a. Chess has weekend tournaments just like soccer or baseball weekend games. However, you have the flexibility to space them based on your schedule to about 1 tournament every 6 weeks. The children really enjoy their time and learn to win gracefully and recover from setbacks, but it represents a commitment from their parents.
b. There should be a tournament within 30 minutes drive of all BayAreaChess programs almost every weekend. BayAreaChess usually organizes four tournaments scheduled every month in San Jose, Atherton, Hillsborough, and other places (see calendar). You can participate in tournaments offered by other organizations as well. The tournaments generally cost about $25-35 except the States cost about twice that amount.
d. BayAreaChess offers two tournament schedules... daytime and evening. The daytime tournament consist of 4 to 5 games scheduled from 10am to about 4pm with lunch and frequent breaks for players to socialize. The evenings tournaments consist of 3 games scheduled from about 5 to 7pm with very few breaks.
c. The State Championship is scheduled in 2010 at Santa Clara on April 17th weekend).
