Frisco Del Rosario's Profile...
Frisco Del Rosario is the only chess teacher to win the San Jose Mercury News's Teacher of the Week award. The Chess Journalists of America named him chess journalist of the year in 2005. He has edited three chess magazines, maintained two newspaper columns, authored A First Book of Morphy, and is a contributor to Chess for Dummies (2nd ed.), and The Complete Idiot's Guide to Chess (2nd ed.). He won Kolty Chess Club (Campbell) Championship in 2002, where he conducts a free class on Thursdays. His first tournament was the Hayward Public Library event in 1972, where his prize was a chess book from Mark Shelton.
He has coached since 1989. He stresses pattern recognition as the biggest part of one's chess ability, and follows the notion that pawn endgames are to chess as putting is to golf. He emphasizes successful endings at the chessboard, whether by checkmate or pawn promotion. He learned all he knows about chess from Capablanca, but was helped by Morphy, who explained it in simpler terms. During lessons, he quotes Purdy and Fine. He is a software developer, and writes about basketball.
