New at Chess
Welcome to the World of Scholastic Chess!
We are thrilled to have your student/child join us. We know that the first tournament can feel like a lot of "chess speak," so we’ve simplified everything you need to know to get started.
Step 3: The USCF Membership
To play in a "Rated" tournament, players must be members of the US Chess Federation (USCF).
Step 1: The 'Two-Site' Rule
BayAreaChess uses two separate websites to keep things organized. You likely already have an account on our Enrichment Site (for school classes), but you will need a separate login for the Tournament Site.
Step 2: Register for the Right Event
For K-5 first-timers, we highly recommend our "Rising Star" or "Signature Quads" events.

- Tournament Site: bayareachess.com
Pro Tip: Use the same email and password for both to keep it simple!

For K-5 first-timers, we highly recommend our "Rising Star" or "Signature Quads" events.
- Look for sections labeled "Unrated" or "Rookie"—these are designed specifically for kids playing their very first official games.

- Don’t have one? No problem! You can purchase a 1-year Youth Membership directly on our registration page here. This gives your child an official National ID and tracking for their progress.
Top 10 Questions Every New Parent Asks
- Is this a "Knock-out" tournament?
No! We use the "Swiss System." This means no one is eliminated. Every child plays every scheduled round (usually 3–4 games), regardless of whether they win, lose, or draw. They will always be paired with someone who has a similar score. - What is a "Rating" and why is it zero?
A rating is just a number that tracks a player’s performance. All beginners start as "Unrated." After they play their first few games, the USCF will calculate their first official rating! - Do we need to bring a chess clock?
No. For our beginner and K-5 sections, clocks are not required. We want the kids to focus on the board and have fun without the stress of a ticking timer. If a game goes on for a very long time, a referee might place a clock on the board just to help it finish, but the kids don't need to bring or know how to use one! - What is "Touch-Move"?
This is the most important rule! If a player intentionally touches a piece, they must move that piece (if it has a legal move). Once they let go of a piece, the move is final. It’s a great way to teach "thinking before acting." - Can I sit with my child while they play?
To ensure a quiet and fair environment, parents and coaches stay in the designated "Parent Area" while games are in progress. Don't worry—there are plenty of other parents to talk to, and our Tournament Directors are always there to help the kids! - What if my child doesn't know how to "Checkmate" yet?
Our beginner sections are very friendly. Tournament Directors (TDs) are there to help explain rules if a child gets stuck. It’s a learning experience! - How long will we be there?
Most K-5 beginner events take about 3 to 4 hours. There is a short break between rounds for snacks and a quick "recap" of the game. - What should we bring?
Just the basics! A water bottle, healthy snacks (read food & drink policy), and perhaps a book or tablet for the downtime between rounds. We provide all the professional chess sets and boards. - Are there trophies?
Yes! We believe in celebrating effort. We usually have an awards ceremony at the end with trophies for top finishers and participation awards so every child goes home feeling like a winner. - What if we have to leave early?
If you need to leave before the end, please just let the Tournament Director know! This is called "withdrawing" and ensures your child isn't paired for the next round, so their opponent doesn't sit there waiting.
