      1. One section with Team Swiss pairings and awards for various rating limits and categories.

      3. A team's rating is the average rating of the team's top 4 players' ratings (Mar 2023 Supplement).
      4. Every team's rating must be < 2200 (strictly less than 2200).
      5. Up to 4 players can play in a given round; players must sit in rating order.
      6. All players must be in the same organization (on Apr 9, 2023) to win the Top Industry, College, School, and Club Award.

    3. Rounds 4-5 byes are final after Round 2 starts

What to expect after registering

        • After Registering

          3. Reconfirm the email address and other information in your profile.
          4. Check this page the day before the tournament for orientation information.

        • What's New?

          1. The 2023 US National Amateur Team South is on:
            1. Non-scholastic: Apr 8-9 (2-day) or 7-9 (3-day)
            2. Scholastic: Apr 9 (Scholastic)
          2. The Championship is 5 rounds.
          3. The Blitz is 5 double rounds.
          4. The time control is G/90 +30; the first two rounds of the 2-day schedule will be G/60 +5.
        • What's Expected?

          1. Come as you are! We welcome all players regardless of their rating and experience (including new players).
          2. US Chess membership is required; if you're not a current member, you must renew/signup with your tournament registration at BayAreaChess.com (and not anywhere else) so we can process and reconcile your entry.
          3. We will use March 2023 Supplement and TD discretion to place players accurately.
          4. We may adjust round times if needed (but it is unlikely).
          5. Be nice to everyone!
      • Financial Transparency

        1. The entry fees are slightly higher due to inflation.
      • Playing Conditions

        Team Captains’ Responsibilities

        The team Captain has several responsibilities in a team tournament, including (but not limited to) the following:
        1. Both team Captains are responsible for turning in the result sheet to the Computer TD.
          1. The team Captain may assign this responsibility to another team member.
        2. The team listed first has White on Boards 1 and 3, and the team listed second has White on Boards 2 and 4.
          1. All team sits on the same side of the table.
          2. A Tournament Director (TD) will specify where the clock must face, regardless of preference by Black.
        3. Ensure the team’s registration has complete and accurate information.
          1. Request and confirm all bye requests for the team and/or team members are accurate and current.
          2. Know the March 2023 supplement rating of each player on the team.
        4. Ensure the team arrives on time for each match.
        5. Confirm the team plays in the >descending rating order with the correct colors.
          1. The team’s match will be forfeited if a lineup is not in rating order. (However, the games will be rated.)
          2. Players must sit in their rating order (according to March 2023 Supplement); the highest rated on board 1, 2nd highest on board 2, 3rd highest on board 3, and 4th highest on board 4.
          3. Unrated players’ rating is 0 the board order (unless the TDs assign them ratings).
          4. Unrated players are omitted when computing the players’ average rating to determine the team rating.
          5. A team with multiple players with same rating (including unrated) may choose any order, but then they must sit in the same order.
          6. A team with multiple players with same rating may choose any order, but then they must sit in the same order.
          7. Alternates must be lower-rated than regular team members.
          8. If player(s) are missing from the lineup, lower-rated teammates MUST move up to preserve the rating order; only the last (lowest-rated) board(s) may forfeit any game(s).



        Additional Playing Conditions

        1. Unrated players do not count in their team's rating average.
        2. Player(s) on the team may ask their team Captain about the consequences of a draw for the team’s match.
          1. The Captain may respond to the request without looking at the player’s game.
          2. The Captain may not impose results on their player(s); each player is responsible for their game.
        3. Check wall charts for accuracy after every round and to report any discrepancies to the TD.
